It is the highest mountainous system on the planet near to the coast.
Located in the north of Colombia, it is an isolated system of the Andes, on the Caribbean coast.
It rises steeply from its beaches to a heights of 5,780 meters in its snowy peaks at only 42 kilometers from this.
This imposing mountain occupies the provinces of Magdalena, La Guajira and Cesar with an area of approximately 17,000 km².
There are a network of ecosystems that host countless life forms and are home of a several communities of Native Americans.
It is a part of the National natural park Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta and the National natural park Tayrona, which are administered by the Ministry of Environment.
UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site in 1979.
