Hidroituango, on the Cauca River in Colombia, is one of the largest hydroelectric projects, aiming to generate 2,400 megawatts, meeting about 17% of the nation’s electricity demand.

The biggest project in hydroelectric power generation in Colombia, currently under construction on the Cauca River near the municipality of Ituango in Antioquia Department, Colombia.

8 turbines, Francis type, rated at 307 MW each one, for an installed capacity 2.456 MW

Preliminary construction on the dam began in 2011 and the power plant was expected to begin operations in late 2018, but due heavy rainfall and landslides in 2018 blocked the river’s diversion tunnel, threatening a breach of the dam.

The Hidroituango project, initially estimated at $2.5 billion USD, has seen its cost rise to over $5 billion USD, reflecting a significant increase due to technical challenges and unforeseen contingencies.
